The recipients of Newington Credit Union and Newington Housing Association’s Student Bursary Scheme attended an awards evening in Newington Credit Union on Thursday, 17th October 2019.

The Student Bursary Scheme, which is launched annually to coincide with the commencement of the academic year, has been successfully delivered in partnership by both organisations for over 10 years and aims to provide financial assistance to young adults and mature students who have recently committed to undertake a third level/higher level course or vocation.

In total, thirteen new students, who have just commenced their academic studies this year, were awarded financial support from both organisations. Once a student is awarded a bursary, it is renewed each year and financial support is provided, whilst the students remain in education.

Representatives from both Newington Credit Union and Newington Housing Association were present to distribute the awards to the successful candidates.

Michael Fenton, a long serving Board Member with Newington Credit Union said “We are delighted to once again offer this financial support to those residing within North Belfast, who have committed to undertake their studies either here in N.I or in universities throughout G.B .It is hoped this financial support will help in some way to support them in achieving their own personal targets and aspirations. I also wish to convey my congratulations to all the successful candidates and wish them every success on their educational journey”. On behalf of Newington Credit Union, I am delighted to see interest in this initiative increase year on year. I really hope that when the successful candidates achieve their educational goals, that they remain in North Belfast to apply their skills and knowledge through their future profession and as well as that become active citizens; which will ultimately enhance local communities in general.

Jacqui Gilmore, Head of Housing & Communities with Newington Housing Association said “Having recently joined Newington Housing, I am delighted to witness how initiatives like this can help in some way to encourage those within local communities to pursuit their own personal ambitions. Throughout my time working within the social housing sector, I am not aware of any other housing provider who is delivering this type of partnership working with their local credit union and thus providing such opportunities to its residents. With this in mind, it shows how committed both organisations in supporting and strengthening the communities they serve. Finally, I wish to thank all those involved in assisting with the delivery of such a positive and worthwhile initiative. I hope that the support we provide will encourage others to explore the potential of further education for many years to come”.
